Combining images has been an interest of mine for a long time. In the darkroom days, I cut out prints and collaged them, hoping without much success, to find a way to join them under the enlarger. In many cases a single image is not enough for me. Now with digital tools, I am free to combine as I wish, creating a stronger image, allowing for the development of new ideas and associations.
When you combine two or more images, whether it is a simple side by side, or a more complicated montage, the result is the creation of something completely new. The images speak to each other, often emphasizing elements that are more subdued in each original. The process is similar to building a story sentence by sentence; or even more in writing a poem with the words carefully chosen, and the placement critical.
